A range of both national and international airlines regularly transport tourists to the town of Darwin, on the northern side of Australia. Many hotels are available and more than adequately cater for the area's visitors, ranging from chain hotels close to Darwin Airport (DRW) to centrally located hostels for backpackers. However, Darwin can be busy during the months of July and August, when many local festivals take place and hotels soon fill up.

Darwin: Airport Hotels and Accommodation

Although there are no hotels situated within the grounds of Darwin Airport (DRW), several options lie nearby. The closest and most notable is the Darwin Airport Resort, which is in walking distance of the terminal and near to the Casuarina shopping centre.

Darwin: City Hotels and Accommodation

Central Darwin lies approximately 13 km / 8 miles to the south-west of Darwin Airport (DRW), with many inexpensive B&Bs and guest houses on offer. Most hotels in the city contain at least one swimming pool and feature air-conditioned rooms. Special discounts are most likely during the wet season, particularly between January and February.

Notable festivals in the Darwin area, influencing both hotel rates and availability, include the Royal Darwin Show, the Bali Yacht Race and the Fringe Festival, all of which are held each July, whilst the Darwin Rodeo in August is also a major crowd puller.

Budget accommodation options in central Darwin include a good selection of backpacker hostels, which are concentrated around Mitchell Street, close to the main transit centre. With some much competition in the city, hostel rates are cheap and popular choices include the Park Lodge along Coronation Drive, the City YHA on Mitchell Street, and Elke's Inner City Backpackers on Mitchell Street.

The high season in Darwin falls between May to September, when hotels are at their busiest. Bed and breakfasts are amongst the most popular options, including the Summer House on Quarry Crescent and the Barramundi Lodge on Gardens Road, close to the Central Business District and the Botanical Gardens.

Those looking for more upscale hotels and luxury accommodation in Darwin should head to the Esplanade, where the spectacular views across the bay come at a price. Hotels in this area include the Saville and Novotel Atrium, overlooking both the harbour and the cityscape.
